This translation is from Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940 (2nd Edition) by Lai, Lim, and Y...

My Russian grandfather, Nicolai Stepanoff, fled poverty and war during the 1917 Russian Revolution as a child with his family. His mom had to sell 3 of her 5 children because she could not afford to feed them. Some time later, my grandfather, went and found 2 of them and brought them back, but never found one who went deep into Siberia. My grandfather and his family rode the Trans-Siberian railway to Harbin, China, where they settled and lived for many years. He worked on the Trans-Siberian Railway which must have been very grueling work. At the age of 18, my grandfather immigrated to Angel Island, by way of paddlewheel ship. He taught himself English once he settled in San Francisco on Russian Hill. He worked as a gardener in Golden Gate Park and eventually saved enough money to bring the rest of his family here and buy a home in the Castro. He also owned some rental apartments and might have become quite wealthy, had he not had a gambling problem and lost some of his properties in bets. He managed to keep the family home and raised my mom and her two brothers there, after meeting my Grandmother. My Grandmother's story of how he proposed went something like this: The were sitting in his car and he pulled out a gun and said "Marry me or I'll shoot you." My mom thinks he was joking, but my Grandmother said he was serious. I think they loved each other though. He died from Huntington's disease in 1973 when I was just 18 months old. My mom told me I did visit him in the hospital, which I only have subconscious memories of. I am so grateful and in awe of his incredible courage, strength and struggles he endured to get here and raise a family in a land of freedom and opportunity! Thank you Pop!

The stairs were added when we renovated the island back in 2009. They're part of the terrace that outlines the floor plan of the historic administration building that burned down in 1940.

The first immigration law passed was by George Washington and it was the naturalization act of 1790 and it’s literally says “free white men of good character” but keep pushing your liberal non sense. It goes against actual Americanism . America was never a nation of immigrants let alone from the 3rd world who are a burden, so called “people” like you are why America is turning into a 3rd world country

Did this facility also process Filipinos Japanese and Koreans in addition to the Chinese coming into the western United States? This is different what we have here in the Northeast Ellis Island. In Ellis Island it would processed Germans Russians Poles Italians serbians austrians and Hungarians (Austro-Hungarian empire) in the years 1910-1940.
